The Tigers began a critical three-game series with the Indians on Monday, and things went swimmingly for Motown. Not only did they hammer the home-standing Tribe by a score of 12-1, but also star first baseman Miguel Cabrera, whose right ankle has of late been so bothersome that his sitting out a string of four or five games has been discussed, went the heck off.
Specifically, Cabrera went 4-for-5 with four runs scored (in a game started by Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber) and notched his first multi-homer game of the season. The first was hit on a rope to left field ...
The limp is evident during his trot around the bases, but the bat seems to be in fighting shape. That, by the way, was Cabrera's first home run since Aug. 2. Oh, and Miggy's second and final homer of the day was an opposite-field clout in the eighth.
Cabrera's Labor Day toil lifted his 2014 slash line to .304/.367/.501. That's well shy of his 2012-13 MVP numbers, but there's forward progress therein. The Tigers must now hope that this is an augury of things to come for Cabrera, bum ankle or no.
