BALTIMORE -- Tim Brosnan, MLB vice president and a finalist to replace commissioner Bud Selig, has dropped out of the running, sources said.
Brosnan's surprise decision to drop out leaves MLB COO Rob Manfred and Red Sox part-owner Tom Werner as the two finalists remaining for the commissioner job. Brosnan was thought to have the support of one or two teams, including the Reds. Brosnan has been seen as someone who could join Werrner's team.
Manfred is seen as having about 20 votes but 23 are needed for election. Multiple votes may be taken, but it's possible if no candidate gets 23 votes, a stalemate could be declared, and no new commissioner named at the owners meeting here.
