The Minnesota Twins have agreed to sign free agent starting pitcher Kevin Correia to a two-year contract, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The contract is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 million, per Heyman.
Correia, a 32-year-old right-hander, was 12-11 with a 4.21 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 89 strikeouts in 171 innings last season for the Pirates. In his four seasons as a full-time (or close to full-time) starter, Correia is 46-43 with a 4.51 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.
It's no secret the Twins entered the offseason in desperate need to build organizational depth in the starting pitching department, including at the big-league level, as Twins starters were 39-75 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.48 WHIP last season.
Correia joins Vance Worley, Scott Diamond, Brian Duensing, Liam Hendriks, Trevor May, Cole De Vries, Kyle Gibson and surely several others in the hunt to make the five-man rotation in 2013. And that, of course, is subject to change as the offseason is far from over.
