ESPN reports the Celtics are set to sign free agent C Jason Collins to a one-year, veteran-minimum deal.
The 33-year-old center played just 10 minutes per game and appeared in just 30 games for Atlanta but was limited by injury. He's still one of the better, cheap defensive centers available and for Boston, it gives them more depth at a position that's desperate for it.
The addition could mean rookie Fab Melo gets time with the D-League Maine Red Claws, who Boston enters into a single-affiliate "hybrid" model with starting next year. The Celtics were desperate for depth at center last season, with Kevin Garnett starting at the position. With Garnett not getting any younger (note: no one actually gets any younger, that's a pretty stupid phrase), the C's need upgrades for pure size. Collins can provide that, and he comes at a discount.
