The NFLPA is formally investigating the leak of Josh Freeman's medical info to the public and the Buccaneers handling of the situation, league sources told CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.
It was reported elsewhere on Monday that Freeman was a stage-one participant of the NFL's substance-abuse program. In response to that report, Freeman lashed out with a statement pointing out that he's "never tested positive for any illegal drugs."
Instead, Freeman's status as a stage-one participant is as a result of him being diagnosed with ADHD and being prescribed to the medicines that the rest of America gets for the learning disability.
Obviously the report that he's in the substance-abuse program doesn't look good for Freeman and he's understandably upset.
Having that information leak out -- particularly when Freeman's status with the Bucs is creating waves of bad publicity -- is extremely concerning. And as such the NFLPA is looking into the incident. Though he and coach Greg Schiano have been at odds in recent weeks, the coach said "absolutely not" when asked if he leaked the information.
NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith was already scheduled to be in Tampa today and he informed Freeman he is looking into the release of his drug status, La Canfora reports.
