Houston’s Eric Winston, one of the best right tackles in the game, has some bad news for you. Well, I’ll just let him share it.

So, that’s kind of weird, considering the Texans might lose starting center Chris Myers and starting right guard Mike Brisiel to unrestricted free agency. Which I’m sure makes Matt Schaub, coming off his season-ending injury, feel better about 2012.

But it sounds as if Winston feels OK with it, following up in subsequent tweets with “While my future seems uncertain, I am confident I will land on my feet ... Let me say thank you to Mr. McNair and the whole Texan organization. They have had big role in the player and person I have become.”

Winston’s announcement caused quite a stir on Twitter on Monday evening, because his release was quite unexpected and because his cap hit to the Texans was a manageable $5.5 million. Now, Winston, who was in the fourth year of a five-year, $30 million contract and who hasn’t missed a start since his rookie year in 2006, can expect to make even more now that he’s on the open market.

The question this begs, though, is why? Are the Texans trying to save money to re-sign defensive stud Mario Williams, or are they really trying to figure out if they can afford to go after Peyton Manning? Either way, it’s a transaction that’s been met with plenty of head-scratching.
