On a drive that did not start off very well, the San Francisco 49ers found a way to get themselves a touchdown anyway. Blaine Gabbert missed badly on a couple passes early in what wound up being a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive, but he came back and found tight end Vance McDonald for a 43-yard score to knot the 49ers' preseason opener against the Houston Texans at 7-7. (Houston had taken the early lead on a fumble-recovery touchdown.)

McDonald was wide-the-heck open on the play, as Bernardrick McKinney had fallen down while trying to cover him off the line of scrimmage. McDonald then made a nice cut to completely embarrass Quintin Demps, who took a pretty bad pursuit angle while trying to chase McDonald down from the side.

Earlier in the drive, the 49ers converted on 4th down. Facing 4th and 1 from his own 39-yard line, Chip Kelly kept the offense on the field. Gabbert worked out of the shotgun and handed the ball to Carlos Hyde, who plowed up the middle for five yards.

Two plays later, the 49ers were facing 3rd and 10. Gabbert dropped back to pass, scampered away from pressure, and scrambled 13 yards for another first down. Two plays later, McDonald was in the end zone.
