Byron Maxwell: Hits waivers with injury settlement
The Seahawks waived Maxwell (hip) from injured reserve Saturday, Ben Arthur of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.
Maxwell was on track to be the starting right cornerback in Seattle before suffering a hip flexor injury. He's a talented defender, making 48 tackles, seven pass breakups and one interception through nine games last season. Once he heals, the 30-year-old will likely find a roster spot somewhere.

Maxwell tended to a hip flexor injury throughout the preseason, stirring rumors that he could be on the chopping block in advance of the cutdown date. Instead, the Seahawks will place the 30-year-old cornerback on IR. With the move, there's a question of who will slot into the starting lineup opposite Shaquill Griffin among Dontae Johnson, Justin Coleman or Neiko Thorpe (wrist).

Maxwell's expected absence could spell trouble for the 30-year-old vet. It has been nearly a month since Maxwell last appeared on the field following a hip flexor injury. With only one-year left on his current deal, the Seahawks have little to lose if they choose to move forward without Maxwell, which appears like a real possibility at this point given his prolonged absence from the team.

Maxwell (hip) won't play in Friday's preseason tilt with the Vikings, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Maxwell is now slated to miss another preseason game following the news of his projected absence. For Maxwell, the time missed seems to be adding up and getting more costly by the second. Teammate Dontae Jackson could wind up earning the starting corner spot opposite Shaquill Griffin. Seattle is also high on Tre Flowers' potential with the team. If Maxwell is to keep his name in the mix, he'll need to do so by staying on the field.

Maxwell's return to practice in full pads suggests he's at the very least close to 100 percent. Groin injuries have a history of being lingering ailments, so it'll be important to keep an eye on Maxwell's progression in practice over the coming weeks.

There doesn't appear to be much concern regarding the severity of Maxwell's injury, but missing a preseason game isn't a huge deal for a veteran cornerback like him. Expect another update on Maxwell's status to come Thursday, and if he is ultimately ruled out, Tre Flowers would be in line to start.

Seahawks' Byron Maxwell: Returning to Seattle
Maxwell agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Seahawks on Friday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports.
Maxwell, who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Seahawks, returned to Seattle last November and started the final six games of the season, piling up 38 tackles, seven pass breakups and one interception in that stretch. Cornerback is an area of need for the team with Richard Sherman no longer around, and Maxwell should have every opportunity to open the 2018 season in the starting lineup across from Shaquill Griffin.

Maxwell recorded 46 tackles, seven pass breakups, one interception and two forced fumbles in nine 2017 games.
Maxwell played two games for the Dolphins and seven games for the Seahawks, posting the most tackles per game of his career. If Richard Sherman (Achilles) returns to full speed by the start of the 2018 season, Maxwell and Justin Coleman will battle for the No. 3 corner role.

Seahawks' Byron Maxwell: Starting in Week 12
Maxwell is on track to start Sunday's game against the 49ers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Maxwell, who began his career in Seattle and played four seasons with the club before hitting free agency in 2015, re-signed with the team earlier this month after getting cut by the Dolphins. The Seahawks wasted no time thrusting him back into action Week 11 against the Falcons after Shaquil Griffin (concussion) departed the contest early, with Maxwell finishing that contest with three tackles and a pass breakup while playing 60 snaps. With Griffin ruled out for Sunday's matchup, Maxwell will now join Jeremy Lane (knee) in a starting role.

Seahawks' Byron Maxwell: Lands back in Seattle
Maxwell signed a one-year contract with the Seahawks on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Maxwell was cut loose by the Dolphins on Oct. 24 after an injury plagued start to the season, but will rejoin the "Legion of Boom" in Seattle, or at least, what's left of it. Richard Sherman (Achilles) is lost for the season while Kam Chancellor (neck) and Earl Thomas (hamstring) are also nursing injuries, severely testing the depth of the Seahawks' secondary. The 28-year-old's familiarity in the system should help minimize the transition period, but it can't be ignored that he has rarely looked like the same player since first leaving Seattle after the 2014 season.

Dolphins' Byron Maxwell: Cut loose by Miami
The Dolphins released Maxwell (foot) on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
A key member of the Seahawks' "Legion of Boom" secondary from 2011 through 2014, Maxwell has failed to meet expectations since signing a six-year, $63 million contract with the Eagles in 2015. After a poor first season in Philadelphia, Maxwell was traded to the Dolphins in 2016 and wasn't able to bounce back, with hamstring and foot injuries this season not helping his cause. Maxwell missed his fourth straight game Sunday against the Jets and likely would have lost out on a starting role upon returning to full health, so the Dolphins decided to cut bait on the veteran cornerback, who will be replaced on the 53-man roster by quarterback David Fales. Once he's able to shake off the injury woes, Maxwell could generate interest elsewhere for teams in need of an experienced depth defensive back.

Maxwell will be unavailable for the fourth straight week, despite being able to put in full practices Wednesday through Friday. After the multigame absence, the Dolphins may want to see Maxwell practice fully a few more times and rebuild his conditioning before clearing him to play again. Maxwell's next chance to take the field will come Thursday against the Ravens.
