Whitehead, who is out with a broken foot, was waived with an injury designation during final roster cuts Saturday. As expected, he cleared waivers and subsequently landed on the team's IR. He will remain there for the entire 2017 season unless he and the team reach an injury settlement.

This offseason has not been good to Whitehead, and now he'll have to wait for a likely injury settlement before he finds new employment. Head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that Whitehead will undergo foot surgery this week, Darryl Slater of NJ.com reports.
Whitehead has endured an unfortunate past few weeks, from mistaken identity leading to his release by the Cowboys to breaking his foot at practice Monday. The initial prognosis gave Whitehead a 4-6 week recovery, but Bowles wouldn't commit to any sort of timetable, other than to say the return man "could" return at some point this season. With Whitehead out to start the campaign, the Jets will look to Frankie Hammond, Romar Morris and Marcus Murphy to cover kick and punt returns.

Lucky Whitehead: Misidentified in larceny case, cleared of all charges
Whitehead was misidentified in a petty larceny case in Virginia in June and has now been cleared of all charges, ESPN.com reports.
The Cowboys released Whitehead on Monday after reports surfaced earlier in the day that the 25-year-old had committed misdemeanor larceny in June and had failed to appear in court thereafter. "I think we've gotten Lucky a lot of different chances along the way going back to last year. I think we just decided it was time to go in a different direction," said Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones on Monday. However, it has since been reported that Whitehead's information was falsely provided by another individual at the time of the incident, which clears Whitehead of any wrongdoing. While the Cowboys have parted ways with the wideout, the new information that has surfaced means he has one less obstacle to overcome in finding a new team.

Lucky Whitehead: Cut by Dallas
Whitehead (hamstring) was cut Monday by the Cowboys, NFL.com reports.
Whitehead's release comes on the same day it was revealed that he missed a scheduled arraignment in court earlier in July for a misdemeanor petty larceny charge he received in Virginia in June. Though Whitehead isn't scheduled to appear in court again until Aug. 10, it seems the Cowboys didn't want to wait around for the legal process to sort itself out. Whitehead's dismissal would seem to represent an organizational vote of confidence in rookie Ryan Switzer, who now appears poised to open the 2017 campaign as the Cowboys' primary return man.
