Schmitt was released by the Saints on Thursday, Herbie Teope of The Times Picayune reports.
Schmitt was the favorite to win the Saints long-snapper job in 2017 after signing with the team in January. It's unclear why he was released before even reaching training camp, but he'll have a chance to catch on with another team for the coming year.
