Smith spent time in jail for felony assault in March 2018 and was subsequently released by the Raiders. He remained unsigned before being suspended for the remainder of the season in November. The 31-year-old has started 122 games since being drafted during the second round by the Dolphins in 2009.

Raiders' Sean Smith: Released Monday
Smith was released by the Raiders on Monday, Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
The 30-year-old cornerback has 123 NFL starts to his name, but the Raiders were never going to pay his $8.25 million salary for 2018 after he was benched for part of last season. In addition to his declining play, Smith is expected to plead guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of assault with great bodily injury, and he'll be sentenced to one year in jail with three years of probation, per Nathan Fenno of The Los Angeles Times. Even if the sentence is suspended or shortened, it's safe to assume Smith will face a suspension from the NFL. He may struggle to attract interest as a free agent.

Smith played 48 of 64 defensive snaps for the Raiders in Sunday's victory over the Titans and apparently suffered the injury during the game after not being on the injury report last week. The veteran corner was targeted four times and allowed two catches for four yards last week. The Raiders hope he'll be ready to go and can continue that level of play against the Jets on Sunday.
