2017 Fantasy Baseball Draft Prep: Relief strategy, David Price questions linger into 12-team Rotisserie mock draft

Some believe the reliever-heavy approach is the way to go in Rotisserie leagues. Heath Cummings details how the approach worked for him in our latest mock draft.

My favorite part about the challenge of building a Rotisserie team is that you’re forced to look at roster construction in a multi-dimensional way. 

Sure, you have to have a strategy about filling out more positions. The two catchers change the equation as do the five outfielders. More importantly you have to manage your position in each category at the same time. And we haven’t even talked about pitching yet. Pitching is where it gets really interesting.

It’s widely accepted that starting pitchers are less valuable in this format and relief pitchers get a bump. So much so, that some people will build relief-heavy pitching staffs with just 1-2 starters to make sure they hit the innings minimum. I went with a hybrid of that approach and came away feeling lukewarm about it. 

The general idea behind reliever-heavy is you should be well ahead in saves, ERA and WHIP while struggling in Ks and wins. The bigger idea is that you will build an offense that is the best in the league and offense is generally more predictable. I tried to hedge by taking Chris Sale at the start of the Round 3 and Gerrit Cole at the end of Round 8. The one problem with that is those two starters could have helped my hitting.

I ended up with a solid lineup bolstered by strength in the outfield, but I’d imagine I’ll struggle a little in batting average and steals. You can’t punt any offensive categories when you’re likely to be as weak in wins and Ks as this approach will leave you. So I’ll be scrambling to find players who can help me in those two categories. Had we drafted benches, that’s where my focus would have turned.

I don’t like committing to position-dependent strategies early in the draft, but that doesn’t mean I don’t go in with a strategy. It just means I’m not married to it, which is what I would suggest for you as well.
