Schimpf returned to the starting lineup Wednesday, going 1-for-4 with his 14th home run of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Cubs.

The slugging infielder has been providing the thump for the Padres recently, going yard in five of his last eight starts. While that display of power would lead one to believe that he is on a hot streak, those homers represented just five of Schimpf's six hits over that span. If that wasn't enough of an intriguing stat, all but one of his long balls over the eight-game stretch were of the solo variety. This has been a microcosm of the 29-year-old's season, as he owns a paltry .168 batting average despite being tied for fourth in the majors with 14 home runs.
