Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Tuesday that Cashner (oblique) could be cleared to come off the disabled list and start Sunday against the Yankees, Sam Butler of MLB.com reports.
Cashner's oblique injury isn't nearly as severe as those suffered by rotation mates Cole Hamels and A.J. Griffin, so he only looks to be in line for a brief stint on the disabled list. The right-hander is expected to throw a bullpen session Thursday or Friday, at which point the Rangers will formally determine if he's ready to rejoin the rotation Sunday. If the Rangers opt to push back Cashner's return, Nick Martinez would pick up his second start of the week after tossing 6.1 innings in Tuesday's win over the Blue Jays.
