Boyd was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.
Boyd has had a rough season in the starting rotation for Detroit, posting a 5.69 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP over 11 starts, so he'll head down to the minors in order to work out the kinks. The southpaw remains a viable option for a call-up later this season, but his 7.28 ERA over the month of May simply couldn't justify a starting spot. It remains unclear who will take his spot in the rotation, though recently-recalled Warwick Saupold represents a possible option. Reliever Daniel Stumpf was recalled in a corresponding move.
