Carolina released Erving on Tuesday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Erving left the Panthers' preseason opener early with an ankle injury, but he appears to be healthy, as Carolina didn't cut him with an injury designation. If he clears waivers, the 2015 first-round pick will head to free agency.
