Thornton was released by the Cowboys on Sunday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
The Cowboys had to cut someone to make room for newly acquired linebacker Jayrone Elliott. Thorton had been dealing with some injuries recently and wasn't expected to be a major contributor among the defensive front this season which made him an expendable candidate.
