Following a minor league rehab start on Wednesday, Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia woke up with swelling and fluid in his right knee on Thursday. He was shut down from his rehab and headed off for an MRI. There is no timetable for his return.
"We're waiting to see what the next step is," said manager Joe Girardi to reporters (ESPN NY). "Can't tell you how long he's going to be shut down. He said nothing during the game about it, he woke up today, and that's the report I got. Today it was swollen, similar to what he's experienced before."
Sabathia, 33, has been on the disabled list since May with what GM Brian Cashman called a "degenerative condition" in his right knee. Sabathia had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in the knee after the 2006 and 2010 seasons. He received a stem cell treatment a few weeks ago.
In eight starts before the injury, Sabathia went 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA. He went 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA last season following offseason elbow surgery.
The Yankees are currently without Michael Pineda (shoulder) and are rumored to be in the market for pitching help.
