The Orioles have their All-Star first baseman back. Chris Davis has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 26 due to an abdominal strain, but Sunday he was officially activated, the club announced.
On the flip-side to the good news, the Orioles also provided some bad news, in the form of sending All-Star catcher Matt Wieters to the disabled list with an elbow strain. Earlier this week, it was feared that Wieters might need season-ending elbow surgery, but a visit to Dr. James Andrews brought back good news and he'll avoid surgery.
Being unable to throw, Wieters was in the lineup four times this past week as the DH, but he's 1-for-13 in the last three games. Apparently the parties involved felt it necessary to rest the elbow in an attempt to get him back behind the plate in a few weeks.
Wieters, 27, is hitting .308/.339/.500 (130 OPS+) with five doubles, five homers and 18 RBI this season. Losing him is definitely a big blow for the Orioles.
Getting Davis back is a huge plus, though. As is common knowledge, the led the majors in homers (53) and RBI (138) last season. The Orioles haven't had a single lineup, before Sunday, that included both Davis and Manny Machado. And yet they still have a 1.5-game lead in the AL East.
