The Yankees have designated reliever Cory Wade for assignment, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reported Monday.
With pitching prospect Dellin Betances slated to pitch in the Arizona Fall League, the Yankees needed to clear a spot in order to activate him off the 60-day disabled list. Betances was ranked the 63rd-best prospect in baseball this season by Baseball America but couldn't find his footing, posting a 6.44 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A in 27 starts before being shut down with shoulder tendinitis.
Wade, a 2011 waiver claim from the Rays, was a godsend for the 2011 Yankees, throwing 39.2 innings with a pristine 2.04 ERA and 3.75 K/BB. The peripherals remained strong in 2012 -- 38 strikeouts to eight walks in 39 innings -- but Wade was singled to death, allowing a 6.46 ERA behind a 10.6 H/9.
