In the course of Tuesday night's Reds-Indians contest (CIN 9, CLE 2), a baseball oddity led to David Murphy's making an out on the bases. Rather than explain at the outset, let's just roll this action-news footage ...

Yep, that's a second ball on the field, and Murphy was extinguished at third because the non-sanctioned ball lured him off the bag. Unfortunate, that.

Contrary to what the Indians' broadcaster attests, the ball did not come from the stands. Rather -- as C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer writes -- the presence of the rogue baseball was the result of Jumbo Diaz's making a vigorous overthrow in the Reds' bullpen. So that was a thing that happened on Tuesday night.
