Marc Gasol could return in January. (USATSI)

The Grizzlies were already struggling when Marc Gasol went down with a severely sprained MCL in late November. But without him, they've been a total mess. Despite the win over the Knicks (come on, it's the Knicks), they've struggled mightily on both ends with him out. But that could be changing soon.

Well-known radio host and connected media guy in Memphis Chris Vernon reports that Gasol could be as close to 10 days out, most likely two weeks, from a return to the court.

Not surprising if you're familiar with Gasol. He played through a torn abdominal muscle last spring. He's a fast-healer and able to play though pain. But the bigger question is if he should rush back. He and the Grizzlies, provided it's safe, would of course agree, believing they're not out of the playoff race by any means. (Memphis is currently three games behind the 8th seed. But they lost Quincy Pondexter for what is likely the year, the defense hasn't looked the same under new head coach Dave Joerger and the offense looks just as bad.

The Grizzlies might have to look to their future, but that time probably isn't now. Getting Gasol back will undoubtedly make them a better team.
