The Cleveland Browns didn't exactly go diving into the free-agent pool. They merely waded in the shallow water. Not only did they only sign two players, but they are both DEs. Here's an evaluation of both pickups:
DE Frostee Rucker: Signed on March 14 from Cincinnati, Rucker fills a desperate need at a position that was the weakest on the defense last year. He should help a run defense that was among the worst in the NFL in 2011. His improved pass rush earned him more playing time with the Bengals last season. He's no Pro Bowl threat, but he's certainly better against the run than anyone else the Browns can throw out there at that position.
DE Juqua Parker: Signed on March 15 from Philadelphia, Parker is battling Marcus Benard as the top pass-rushing specialist. The Browns were seeking depth all along their defensive line in the offseason, and the acquisition of Parker provided some. He hasn't stood out in training camp, but he should receive plenty of playing time in preseason games.
