Man, Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb just cannot catch a break.

First, he’s got Kurt Warner saying that he might be a decent starter if Kolb could, you know, learn Ken Whisenhunt’s offense. Now, he’s got his star receiver Larry Fitzgerald saying on ESPN that he would pick Calvin Johnson over himself in fantasy football because of the questions at quarterback in Arizona.

"I think Megatron and Matthew Stafford have a great connection up there in Detroit,” Fitzgerald said (h/t to CBSSports.com’s Will Brinson for the transcript). “They put together a phenomenal year -- 5,000 yards by Matthew Stafford. So I would definitely take Megatron and Matthew Stafford. They have it going. We have some questions right now in Arizona. We have training camp to figure out who our starting quarterback is, so as of today I think that's a smart choice."

The Fitzgerald comment, probably funny to everybody not named Kevin Kolb and commendable for its honesty, is a low blow, but at the same time, Kolb hasn’t done anything to make questions disappear about how fit he is to start at quarterback in the NFL.

Arguably, John Skelton had a better season last year when Kolb was out of the lineup with injuries (and the team certainly performed better for Sketon). Fans have gotten tired of the disappointment after just one year, booing Kolb at a fan fest in June, and not even Whisenhunt could give his endorsement of Kolb as the 2012 Cardinals starter.

"If it was up to me, I'd prefer we had a quarterback resolution two years ago," Whisenhunt said. "You got to let this competition play out honestly."

And now, Fitzgerald has spoken. Here’s hoping Dave Richard and Jamey Eisenberg are paying attention.
