DT Chris Canty (knee) isn’t happy to be starting training camp on the PUP list, but he's confident he’ll be ready to play in the season opener on Sept. 5 against his former team, the Dallas Cowboys.

“I definitely wouldn't want to miss that one,” Canty said Saturday. “[The knee] will be ready. And when it's ready, we'll go.”

As far as a specific return date for Canty, that’s still up in the air.

“If the boss said it’s going to be awhile, it’s going to be awhile,” Canty said, referring to coach Tom Coughlin's comments on Friday.

The Giants have decent depth at defensive tackle. Starter Linval Joseph is back and the team added veteran Shaun Rogers in the offseason. More importantly, last season’s second-round pick, Marvin Austin, is finally ready to contribute after languishing on IR with a pectoral tear in 2011.

Canty (knee) and Joseph (ankle) each had surgery back in February. However, Joseph doesn’t appear to be limited by the procedure.
