The quarterback situation in San Francisco might have just taken an interesting twist: Apparently, Chip Kelly is reportedly ready to give Colin Kaepernick a chance at the starting job.

Early on Friday, CBSSports.com NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported that frustration with Kelly's offense was mounting in the 49ers' locker room after the team's Thursday night loss to the Cardinals.

Before the season started, it was believed that one of the reasons that the 49ers were hesitant to play Kaepernick is because his contract is guaranteed for injury. Basically, if Kaepernick got hurt while playing in a game this year, his contract for 2017 would become guaranteed.

However, it seems that problem might soon be solved. La Canfora has reported that Kaepernick and the 49ers have agreed to restructure his contract, which currently runs through the 2020 season.

The new deal would give Kaepernick the option to void the contract after the 2016 season, which could potentially benefit Kaepernick because he could make more money in free agency. The restructured deal would also void the injury guarantees that Kaepernick currently has for 2017.

If Kaepernick's reworked deal becomes official, it wouldn't be a surprise at all to see him as the starting quarterback against Buffalo.

That being said, Chip Kelly wasn't ready to confirm anything on Friday.

The 49ers coach said on Friday that the starting quarterback job is still up in the air for San Francisco's next game in Buffalo on Oct. 16.

"I don't know who's going to start against Buffalo," Kelly said, via the Bay Area News Group.

There's also another wrench in the quarterback situation: Christian Ponder. According to one report, Ponder is slowly winning support in the 49ers' locker room.

A 49ers team source told CSN Bay Area that Ponder, the team's third-string quarterback, will give the 49ers the best chance to win.

"Ponder is the best option for quarterback on the roster," the source said.

Although the idea of Ponder starting might sound crazy, this is Kelly we're talking about, so you can't rule anything out. Kelly's going to do whatever he feels is best for the team, and right now, it appears that he's not sure what that is.

After sticking behind Gabbert for five weeks, it definitely sounds like Kelly is ready to make a change. After the 49ers' 33-21 loss to the Cardinals on Thursday, Kelly didn't promise that Gabbert would continue to start.

"I think we're going to look at everything," Kelly said. "I mean, we're 1-4. We need to make sure we're going out there and giving us the best chance to win, so we're going to look at everything."

Gabbert only threw for 162 yards in the game, and he also tacked on two interceptions.

Although Ponder seems to have support in the locker room, Kaepernick has plenty of support coming from another place: the fans.

During the second half of Thursday's loss, fans chanted for Kelly to put Kaepernick in the game.

Unfortunately for the fans, Kelly didn't take their suggestion and he kept Kaepernick in the game.

The fans might get their wish in Week 6, though.

If Kaepernick does play, it will be his first time starting a game since November 2015 and also, it would be his first time starting since he began protesting racial inequality in August by kneeling for the national anthem.
