In the spring, former Wisconsin wide receiver Jared Abbrederis was considered one of the best route runners available in the 2014 NFL Draft. There were other, more athletic pass catchers but any doubts about Abbrederis' abilities were put to rest when he torched former Ohio St. cornerback and Broncos' '14 first-rounder Bradley Roby for 10 catches and 207 yards last season.
The Packers eventually selected Abbrederis in the fifth round and he was off to a fast start in his first NFL training camp. But a knee injury in Thursday's practice could be of the season-ending variety.
According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn, the "diagnosis of the team's medical staff early Friday morning was a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The team was awaiting results of more diagnostic tests to confirm their original finding."
Around 11 a.m. local time Friday, coach Mike McCarthy had no update for reporters. "I haven't had time to sit down with the medical staff," he said. "Right now, he has a knee. He completed practice yesterday."
McGinn writes that one of the reasons Abbrederis slipped in the draft was because of durability questions. "Personnel people from two teams said he suffered three or four concussions at UW, although Abbrederis maintained he incurred just one. In high school, he suffered a broken right femur as a sophomore but made a rapid recovery."
