The Texans have sorely needed a true weapon in the passing game opposite Andre Johnson for a long time. And they just reportedly cut the closest thing they had in Kevin Walter.
Walter was waived by the team, multiple reports indicate, and the move will reportedly save Houston $2.5 million in cap space.
The 31-year-old wideout has averaged 47 catches, 583 yards and three touchdowns in his seven years with the Texans.
He topped out at 899 yards in 2008.
Losing Walter leaves a pretty big hole at wideout on the Texans depth chart behind Johnson, especially since DeVier Posey tore his ACL during the postseason. Lestar Jean, Keshawn Martin, and Jeff Maehl do not a depth chart make.
It's possible the Texans could address the issue in free agency, as there are plenty of supplemental guys out there. The more logical move, however, is to use, for the first time since they drafted Johnson in 2003, a first-round pick on a wideout.
