Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman was arrested Wednesday evening by Bellevue (WA) police and booked for investigation of vehicular assault and hit and run. The Seahawks have suspended Coleman indefinitely pending further information into the matter.
Coleman's agents released a statement on Thursday.
"On the evening of October 15, 2015, ... Coleman was involved in a two-car collision soon after leaving a team meeting. While the facts of the case are still being determined, it seems Derrick may have fallen asleep while driving home from a Seahawks' facility.
"The health and well-being of all involved is our primary concern, and we are thankful to report that both parties are expected to make a full recovery. We will continue to work closely with the local officials while a full investigation is being conducted."
Coleman's Dodge pickup struck a Honda Civic. According to a law enforcement source that spoke with Seattle Times' Jennifer Sullivan, the fullback appeared uninjured, getting out of his vehicle and walking away. A field-sobriety test was administered though there was no indication that that Coleman was intoxicated at the time of the collision. He was arrested without incident.
Coleman, who began his career with the Vikings, has played in 22 games since joining the Seahawks in 2013. He has been deaf since he was three years old, and has been featured as a role model for the hearing impaired.
