The Denver Broncos announced on Monday that quarterback Mark Sanchez underwent surgery last weekend after tearing a ligament in the thumb of his left (non-throwing) hand.

The Broncos made the announcement in a statement on their official website, where they also stated that Sanchez will miss the start of OTAs.

Sanchez is expected to miss a few days at the start of the four-week OTA period, which stretches into mid-June.

The eight-year veteran suffered the injury while working in the weight room Thursday as part of team-wide strength-and-conditioning work.

Sanchez was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a conditional 2017 draft pick earlier this offseason after the Broncos saw Peyton Manning retire and then Brock Osweiler leave for the Houston Texans in free agency. Trevor Siemian, a seventh-round pick in 2015, was previously the only quarterback on the team's roster.

In Sanchez's absence, Siemian and Paxton Lynch, the former Memphis passer for whom the Broncos traded up from No. 31 to No. 26 in the 2016 NFL Draft, will take the snaps in OTAs.
