An awfully scary scene in Winnipeg saw 19-year-old rookie Jacob Trouba carted off the ice on a stretcher. The promising Jets bluliner fell face-first into the boards behind the St. Louis net while trying to get around Blues defenseman Jordan Leopold.

Unlike the two other times stretchers came out this week, there was no ugly hit or dangerous play, it was just a fluke accident as Trouba lost his footing trying to get to a loose puck.

Trouba’s head hit the boards with some awful force, as multiple replays showed. He laid on the ice barely moving and the stretcher came out. He was attended to by multiple medical personnel on the ice before leaving on the stretcher.

Trouba’s eyes appeared to be open and he gave a small wave to the crowd from the stretcher. He was moving his extremities, which of course is a good sign and one of some comfort after the violent fall.

This is the third time a stretcher has been needed in an NHL game this week and fourth this season. It is also the second time this week a St. Louis game has been halted for an emergency medical situation. Dan Boyle was carted off Tuesday after a hit from behind by Maxim Lapierre of the Blues. Lapierre was suspended five games Friday

There was no malice here, though. It was just a freak accident that you absolutely hate to see happen, especially involving such a young player.

Trouba has been outstanding for the Jets this year, averaging more than 23 minutes per game. He is just one year removed from his freshman season at the University of Michigan and has one goal and one assist in seven games with Winnipeg. He was also an invitee to Team USA's Olympic orientation camp.

UPDATE: Scott Brown, spokesman for Winnipeg's ownership group, provided the following status update on Jacob Trouba:

UPDATE II: Jets head coach Claude Noel provided the latest on Trouba in his post-game remarks.

UPDATE III: Trouba was released from the hospital overnight. Another update from the Jets on his status is expected Saturday. Upon his release from the hospital, Trouba tweeted his thanks for those concerned.
