The Royals have acquired veteran outfielder Jonny Gomes in a trade with the Braves, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports. In 82 games with Atlanta this season, Gomes was hitting .223 with seven home runs and 22 RBI.

He will give the Royals some depth in the outfield and off the bench as they get ready for a likely postseason run. Gomes has been to the playoffs several times in his career, and is 7 for 49 lifetime in the postseason. He won a World Series ring with the Red Sox in 2013.

In return, the Braves will receive minor-league infielder Luis Valenzuela, Heyman adds. Valenzuela has been playing with the Royals' rookie league team and Class A affiliate in Lexington. Overall this season, he is batting .364/.385/.502 in 209 at-bats.
