The White Sox rotation took a hit Tuesday as the team placed right-hander Gavin Floyd on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow tendinitis, retroactive to July 8. The team activated Philip Humber to take his spot in the rotation.

Humber, who threw a perfect game earlier this season, made three starts in the minor leagues on a rehab assignment, going 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA at Triple-A and Double-A. Humber went on the DL on June 17 with an elbow flexor strain. He last pitched on Thursday, giving up one run on two hits in six innings for Double-A Birmingham. Overall, he's 3-4 with a 6.01 ERA in 12 starts for the White Sox. He is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

The White Sox were hoping Floyd could avoid the DL, but he now joins John Danks (shoulder) on the DL. Floyd, 29, is 7-8 with a 4.54 ERA.

Chicago is trying to hold off the surging Tigers, who have won eight of their last nine and are now just 2 1/2 games behind the White Sox in the American League Central going into Tuesday's games.
