After Jared Goff went No. 1 overall to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, it became a near certainty that the Eagles would take Carson Wentz, and that's exactly what happened with the second overall pick.

Thanks to the pick, the former North Dakota State star just became the first non-FBS quarterback to get taken in the first round since 2008, when the Ravens selected Joe Flacco out of the University of Delaware.

Although everyone knew Philly would likely take a quarterback, CBS Sports senior NFL writer Pete Prisco still wasn't a huge fan of the pick.

Prisco might not love Wentz, but the Eagles do, and here's why: For the past three months Wentz has been listed as one of the top two quarterbacks on pretty much every single draft board in America, and there's a good reason for that.

Wentz went 19-3 as a starter in 2014 and 2015 while leading North Dakota State to two straight national championships. Wentz also saw some in action in 2012 and 2013, which were also national title seasons for NDSU. The school also won a national title during Wentz's redshirt season in 2011, so he's kind of used to winning.

The guys over at NFLDraftScout.com describe Wentz as "very smart on and off the field with excellent retention and execution skills. Physically and mentally tough with professional poise and work habits. Great teammate and was an extra coach on the sideline while injured."

Those are all qualities you want to have in a starting quarterback. According to NFL Draft Scout, Wentz is a "physically enhanced version of" Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith.

CBSSports.com's Joel Corry has details on what Wentz's first contract should look like:

It means the Eagles are committing a stunning amount of money to their quarterback situation:

The only question now is: Will Wentz start right away?

Philly's quarterback situation is a mess right now. Although Eagles executive vice president spent the entire offseason saying that Sam Bradford will be the team's starting quarterback in 2016, you have to think the job will go to Wentz if he shows any promise during training camp.

The fact that Bradford doesn't even want to be in Philly anymore is also something could end up helping Wentz win the starting job.

That good news for Eagles fans is that if NFL history is any indication, the Wentz pick could go down as a steal. Three of the last four non-FBS quarterbacks to go in the first round all eventually led their team to a Super Bowl. Those draftees were Phil Simms (Morehead State, 1979), Steve McNair (Alcorn State, 1995) and Flacco.
