Did I Reach for Bishop Sankey?

By Adam Aizer | CBSSports.com

Did I reach for Bishop Sankey? You better believe I DID NOT! No way. Let's talk about it.

Yesterday we did our first mock draft post-NFL Draft. I had the 3rd overall pick in the 12-Team, standard league draft (QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, FLEX, K, DST). Non-PPR. I went with Matt Forte in the first round and Dez Bryant in the second round.

What to do in Round 3?

Julius Thomas, Alshon Jeffrey and Rob Gronkowski were taken just before my selection, so the best players on the board were: Aaron Rodgers, Reggie Bush, Ryan Mathews, Andre Ellington and a host of WRs I wasn't interested in taking. I typically wait on QB and the decision came down to Tennessee rookie RB Bishop Sankey or the Bush/Mathews/Ellington trio.

I went Sankey! And I love it.

Here's why I didn't reach:

  1. How many RBs who are entering their second season were picked in the first two rounds of this draft? How 'bout five! Eddie Lacy, Montee Ball, Le'veon Bell, Giovani Bernard and Zac Stacy were selected in the first 16 picks. How many of them were drafted in the first three rounds last year? Maybe Lacy, and that's it. By the end of the season all but Bernard were must-starts. Doug Martin, Alfred Morris and Trent Richardson had the same success in their rookie seasons in 2012. I don't see why several rookie RBs can't do that in 2014.

  2. Sankey seems like the best rookie RB to select. First of all, where's the roadblock? Shonn Greene? Even if Greene plays a role I can't see him being good enough to hold back Sankey. Sankey has shown receiving skills in college which could help keep him on the field. And quite frankly I just feel like he's more talented than Greene. I don't think I'm going out on a limb there. Plus, he was the first RB selected in the NFL Draft. And when it comes to RBs, a second round pick in the NFL Draft should be viewed the way we used to view a first round pick in the NFL Draft. Sankey probably would be a first rounder in a different era.

  3. Those other RBs have question marks. Reggie Bush could see Joique Bell play a larger role. I worry about Andre Ellington's workload and potentially his TDs. I am a big Ryan Mathews fan but I am not a big fan of the Donald Brown addition to the Chargers backfield. Plus, Mathews gets hurt every year. Last year he waited for the Playoffs, but got hurt nonetheless. Generally speaking I don't really have an issue with any of those three RBs. I'd be happy to have them, but not over Sankey. Give me the fresh legs.

  4. There was no way I was getting Sankey in Round 4. Knowing the way we CBSSports.com guys draft (RBs are typically a high priority), I knew this was my only chance to get Sankey. So I took him. I selected Toby Gerhart in Round 4 and Shonn Greene and David Wilson late to solidify the position.

I'm excited about Sankey. Of course things could change in Training Camp and preseason, but I don't see why a guy who rushed for 1,870 yards and 20 TDs last year with 304 receiving yards can't have a huge Fantasy impact in 2014.

Let me know what you think!
