Pete Prisco's Grade: B

CBSSports.com senior NFL writer Pete Prisco gave the Browns a B for filling one of the biggest voids on their roster.

"They finally take a quarterback, so give them credit," Prisco says. "He has a ton of talent."

After keeping their fans in suspense for two days, the Browns finally selected a quarterback. Fans in Cleveland were probably a little surprised when the Browns didn't take a QB with one of their three first-round picks on Thursday, but none of them will care if Kizer actually pans out.

The Browns might not have gotten the best quarterback in the draft, but they definitely got the most confident one. In the weeks leading up to the draft, Kizer said he's a combination of Tom Brady's intellect on a body that's built like Cam Newton's. If that's the case, then we'll likely be seeing the Browns in the next 15 Super Bowls, which is good news for a team that's never even been to a Super Bowl.

The downside of Kizer is that his college coach doesn't think he's pro ready and at least one scout believes the former Notre Dame QB lacks focus. Of course, in that sense, the pick makes perfect sense for the Browns, who have a long history of taking quarterbacks who lack focus.

Over the past 10 years, the Browns have taken quarterbacks like Johnny Manziel, Brandon Weeden, Colt McCoy and Brady Quinn with high draft picks and none of them have panned out.

The quarterback position has been such a disappointment for the Browns that some fans at the draft were actually wearing jerseys that featured the name of all 26 starting quarterbacks who have played for the team since 1999.

That's depressing.

The addition of Kizer likely means an end to any and all trade talks between the Browns might have been having in hopes of adding Jimmy Garoppolo or AJ McCarron

Fantasy impact

"Finally, the Browns get a quarterback. And this could work out great for them if Kizer does end up better than Mitchell Trubisky, Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. Kizer might not start right away, but he should be the best quarterback on the Browns roster. And, really, all Fantasy owners hope is that Kizer makes Corey Coleman, David Njoku and Kenny Britt better this season. Kizer is just a second- or third-round pick in rookie-only drafts. NFL comparison

Carson Palmer: Though he has a long way to go to justify the comparison to a former No. 1 overall pick and three-time Pro Bowler, Kizer possesses the physical attributes and mental toughness scouts look for in a franchise quarterback, reminding of a young Palmer. Some forget that prior to a breakout Heisman-winning redshirt senior season in 2002, Palmer struggled with consistency, himself, tossing an identical 39 touchdowns and 39 interceptions before the light came on.
