Pete Prisco's Grade: B

Although Webb most likely won't be playing at all in 2017, CBSSports.com senior NFL writer Pete Prisco likes the Giants' pick, and that's mainly because Webb could end up being the successor to Eli Manning.

"This is Eli Manning's replacement," Prisco wrote. "They had to get him at some point. It makes sense."

Giants coach Ben McAdoo has made it clear that the team needs to find a successor for Manning, who's 36 years old and playing under a contract that expires in 2019.

Instant analysis

The Giants were hoping to land Patrick Mahomes during the first round on Thursday, but after that didn't happen, they decided to settle on another signal caller: Davis Webb.

Thanks to the nonstop publicity garnered by Mitch Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, and Mahomes, Webb was almost an afterthought going into the draft this year, which could be something that ends up working out in his favor.

For one, Webb won't have to face the constant pressure that Trubisky, Watson and Mahomes will all be facing as first-round picks. You could argue that Webb is also in better situation than DeShone Kizer, who ended getting drafted by a Browns team that went 1-15 in 2016.

The best part of this pick for the Giants is that there's no pressure to get Webb on the field. If Manning decides to play until the end of his contract in 2019, the means McAdoo will have three seasons to mold Webb into the perfect starting quarterback.

Although Webb likely isn't happy that he fell to the third round, landing with the Giants just might've been the best-case scenario for the former Cal quarterback.

Fantasy impact

"The Giants are looking for a successor to Eli Manning, and Davis Webb looks to be that guy. Assuming, of course, he can prove to be better than Geno Smith. When you stop laughing at that, keep an eye on Webb in dynasty leagues, so he's a late-round pick in rookie-only formats. Once Manning decides to retire, Webb can be the guy throwing to Odell Beckham, Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram." -- Jamey Eisenberg

NFL comparison

Jay Cutler: If Cutler decides to retire, than the NFL world is going to need another quarterback to shake their head at for the next decade, and that QB could be Webb. Of course, we say "shake their head at" because that's exactly what football fans did with Cutler. On some plays, Cutler would make a throw that was so amazing, fans would shake their head in awe. On other plays, Cutler would make a throw that was so horrible, fans would shake their head wondering how he was still in the league. Webb falls into that category of a guy who will wow you on one throw and then leave you wondering how he made it to the NFL on his very next throw.
