On Sunday during the 2013 NFL Combine, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported the 49ers had a deal in place to trade Alex Smith. The other team involved was still a mystery, although La Canfora pointed to the Chiefs as "the most likely destination for Smith."

That is actually the case now as Smith is going to Kansas City, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms.

The deal, first reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, can't be official until March 12. It's not particularly stunning that the Chiefs were the team in on Smith. But it is stunning news to hear the rumored compensation for Smith -- Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News reports the Chiefs gave up a second-round pick in 2013 and a similar pick in 2014 in exchange for Smith.

That's a large amount in exchange for Smith, who was struggling in San Francisco prior to the arrival Jim Harbaugh.

Glazer noted the Chiefs have made a "clear commitment" to Smith and, um, well, yes they have. It also probably means Smith's going to sign a contract extension in Kansas City once he's free to do so.
