Brady Quinn beat out Ricky Stanzi for the backup quarterback spot in one of the few true battles in the preseason for the Chiefs, coach Romeo Crennel announced on Monday.

Crennel did not announce the decision before practice because he wanted to talk to the players first, but it was no surprise that he went with Quinn even though Stanzi was given every opportunity to win the job.

That was a tweet after Kansas City Star beat writer Adam Teicher talked to Crennel after Monday's practice, and that was impressions the Chiefs gave throughout training camp. Quinn seemed like the obvious choice, but Stanzi had his chance.

In the second preseason game against St. Louis, Stanzi was the first quarterback off the bench, and Crennel said before that game that he wasn't sure if Quinn would play.

When Stanzi threw an interception and was sacked four times, Crennel put Quinn in the game, and he had his best preseason showing, completing 5 of 6 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. That was the pivotal moment in the competition.

The whole body of work also pointed to Quinn, who threw for 195 yards, completed 58.6 percent of his passes and had a touchdown and an interception in three preseason games. Stanzi completed 5 of 11 passes, threw for 66 yards and an interception withouth a touchdown in two preseason games. He did not get a chance to play on Friday.

It's highly unlikely that the Chiefs would cut Stanzi, but fourth-string QB Alex Tanney did make it past the first round of cuts and Crennel said he could get a chance to play against Green Bay.

"We kind of like the guy a little bit," Crennel said. "That's why we kept him."

Poe likely to start against Green Bay: NT Anthony Toribio will miss the Green Bay game with an ankle injury, opening the door for first-round pick Dontari Poe to start his first game.

Crennel said Poe would likely be the No. 1 guy in the Chiefs base defense over second-year NT Jerrell Powe

"He's making progress," Crennel said of Poe. "But he's still that rookie who reverts back to what he knows at times, and he forgets to remember how we want to do it. There was one play in the game, he was in good position on the blocker and ended up jumping off the block, thought he could make the play and that opened up a hole."

Flowers out of walking boot: CB Brandon Flowers did not practice on Monday, but one sign pointed to the fact that he could be making progress: Flowers was no longer wearing a walking boot, Teicher reported

Crennel said that S Kendrick Lewis is also making progress, as he has began to work on strengthing motions with his injured shoulder.

The Chiefs also received some good news on the injury front on DL Glenn Dorsey. Crennel said that Dorsey told him he was OK -- Dorsey had left Friday's preseason game with a knee injury.

Also returning to practice -- in a limited role -- were rookie RB Cyrus Gray and rookie CB DeQuan Menzie.
