David Akers ties NFL record with 63-yard field goal to close half

David Akers hit an NFL-record-tying 63-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give the 49ers a 16-7 lead at halftime over the Packers at Lambeau.

If you hear "David Akers 63" you're probably thinking age, right? Not on Sunday, when Akers hit a 63-yard bomb of a field goal against the Packers to give the 49ers a 16-7 halftime lead in Green Bay.

Sixty-three yards ties the record for longest field goal in NFL history, and it's equally impressive given that a) Akers is old (37), and b) this went down at Lambeau Field, which isn't exactly the most kicker-friendly environment.

Oddly enough, we also saw this happen on opening weekend last year, when Sebastian Janikowski roped a 63-yard kick that became infinitely less cool after the Raiders decided to appeal to the NFL to have it changed to 64 yards.

What also makes Akers' kick so cool is that it hit the crossbar, popped straight up and rolled in. It was almost like the infamous Tiger Woods Nike-logo-roll shot, if kicking a field goal at halftime was anything like hitting an insanely impossible chip to basically win the Masters.
