Dolphins looking to land CB Brent Grimes
The Dolphins have been one of the most active teams during this free agency period. That activity could continue as CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports Miami is looking to sign cornerback Brent Grimes.
The Dolphins have been one of the most active teams during this free agency period -- landing the likes of receiver Mike Wallace, tight end Dustin Keller, linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, linebacker Philip Wheeler and receiver Brandon Gibson. And it sounds like they’re not finished yet, especially since they still have to fill the spot vacated by cornerback Sean Smith.
As CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora tweets:
Dolphins still not done in free agency - very much in on CB Brent Grimes, who played on franchise tag in '12. could land there soon— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 28, 2013
Grimes, of course, made more than $10 million with the Falcons last season, but he missed most of the year with an Achilles tendon injury. Either way, the 2010 Pro Bowler is one of the top free agents left on the market. He has also been linked to the Browns and the Buccaneers, but Miami has a big need at cornerback.
“I think we’re going to have a good nucleus with a good defense,” coach Joe Philbin said recently, via The Miami Herald. "The biggest thing we said, we’ve got to find a way to take the ball away. After watching all of the cutups, 1,000 or so plays on defense, we can’t survive with 16 takeaways."
With the loss of Sean Smith this offseason and the trade of Vontae Davis before last season, the team is looking at starting Richard Marshall (who’s coming off back surgery) and Nolan Carroll (whom Pro Football Focus ranked 67th among all cornerbacks last season). Clearly, Grimes would be an upgrade to that secondary -- which is why there's seemingly a good chance the Dolphins could sign him.
