A year after rebuilding himself into a solid defensive tackle with the 49ers, Glenn Dorsey has been lost for the season with a torn left biceps muscle, according to ESPN.com's Adam Schefter.

Dorsey was the No. 5 overall draft pick of the Chiefs in 2008, but he never became a superstar, never accumulating more than two sacks in a season. He was solid, but not a star. Not a bust, but also not a breakout player.

With the 49ers in 2013, he recorded two sacks while starting 13 of 16 games but played well in run defense. And he impressed his coaches.

Here's what 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said when talking about what he expected out of free agent signee Jonathan Martin, who was given a chance to restart his career after the bullying scandal in Miami.

"Someone like Glenn Dorsey," Harbaugh said in March. "Glenn was the (No. 5) pick in the draft. Maybe not living up to someone's expectations there comes to the San Francisco 49ers and has a tremendous year. ... It's just a powerful opportunity, a powerful motivator. ...

"Like an Etch-A-Sketch. Lifting a page of the Etch-A-Sketch and write a whole new history for yourself."
