San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith turned himself in to authorities Tuesday night on felony weapons charges, according to NBCBayArea.com. Surrendering by the end of the month was part of an agreement Smith made with the Santa Clara District Attorney after he was charged with possessing illegal assault weapons on Oct. 9.

The linebacker reportedly turned himself in at 6:51 p.m. PT and then was released on $75,000 bail a short time later. He's scheduled to appear in court to face the felony weapons charges on Nov. 12. On Nov. 19 he'll be back in court to face misdemeanor DUI and drug charges.

Smith, the 49ers' 2011 first-round pick, is currently on a voluntary leave of absence from the team and undergoing rehab following DUI arrest on Sept. 20.

"I am taking a leave of absence to address my health," Smith said in a statement at the time. "I am sorry that I have affected my team, my family and the organization. I will do everything in my power to handle this situation the best way possible. I appreciate the support of the 49ers and our fans."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said recently that Smith's willingness to enter rehab could lessen any sanctions the league may impose when he returns.

"The issue here is not to discipline players," Goodell said. "The issue is to stop the behavior. And Aldon ... has voluntarily said, 'I need help.' We are obviously there to support him, and the 49ers did a great job getting him into a facility to try to get that help. We all support that. So, yes, it will be a factor, for sure."

There is no timetable for Smith to return to the 49ers.
