Woody Johnson: Jets haven't 'seen the best of' Mark Sanchez yet

PHOENIX -- The big news coming out of Woody Johnson's meeting with the media Sunday evening at the 2013 NFL owners meetings was his unspoken willingness to trade superstar cornerback Darrelle Revis. But Johnson also threw his confidence behind embattled starting quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Johnson was asked if Sanchez is "the guy" at quarterback for the Jets, and he said, "I tell you, we're focusing on it. I don't think we've seen the best of Mark yet."

OK, maybe that's not throwing his confidence behind Sanchez completely. But Johnson pointed out that working with Marty Mornhinweg this offseason should help the quarterback.

The problem is the Jets clearly aren't confident in Sanchez. They added David Garrard this offseason, still have Greg McElroy on the roster and haven't made a decision on what to do with Tim Tebow yet.

That decision doesn't sound like it's coming immediately, either.

"I think we're looking at all possibilities for him," Johnson said when asked about Tebow's future.

Cutting Tebow seems like the most logical move. But that won't end the questions about Sanchez, as the Jets have already been rumored to be in connection with former Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb.

If Sanchez can turn the corner under Mornhinweg, it would be a stunner. He hasn't shown the ability to be a high-end quarterback. There's also a major lack of skill-position talent available for the team to help Sanchez improve.

But that doesn't mean the Jets won't keep trying.
