These stories are making news across the SEC on Wednesday morning:
- With the sudden resignation of WRs coach Angelo Mirando for "unforeseen personal issues," Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen coached wideouts at Tuesday's practice and focused on blocking drills. Going forward, Mullen said a graduate assistant might work with the receivers. He also didn't rule out Mirando eventually returning.
- Two Auburn signees still have not been cleared academically, meaning they might not be admitted. Tight end Darrion Hutcherson and receiver JaQuay Williams await decisions from the Eligibility Center and "it's coming down to the wire," coach Gene Chizik said. "We're trying to evaluate what their status is."
- Georgia senior CB Branden Smith has made it known he wants the punt returner job, badly. "You need a key player back there," he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I want to be back there." Smith is competing with Malcolm Mitchell, Damian Swann and Sheldon Dawson. Smith's career average on 19 punt returns is 11.3 yards.
- Florida redshirt freshman tight end Clay Burton is getting a lot of reps, due to the injuries to Jordan Reed and freshman Colin Thompson. The 6-foot-4, 253-pound Burton, a converted defensive end, is the younger brother of Gators running back Trey Burton. Clay Burton said he's excited about all the motion and shifting in Brent Pease's offense.
- Arkansas' receivers might not possess the same pedigree as last year's group, but physically they're more imposing. Wideout Cobi Hamilton and tight end Chris Gragg are 6-3, and wideout Brandon Mitchell is 6-4. "It makes you feel good as a quarterback knowing you've got those kind of targets out there," QB Tyler Wilson told ArkansasNews.com.
