Editor's Note: Every week, we will release the Top 150 players based on their SportsLine projections for that scoring period. Use this list to compare players and help make those really tough decisions.
To play for the Spurs, you have to be willing to put your personal desires behind what is best for the team. That has been a foundational philosophy of the organization, and LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard might embody that as much as anyone else on the roster right now.
Leonard has made the leap to superstardom this season, and has a pretty good case to be a top-five Fantasy option moving forward, but his growth has been a pretty slow burn. Based on what he has shown this season -- as well as in flashes previously -- Leanard might have been unleashed as a No. 1 offensive option on another team four years ago; on the Spurs, his career-high in points per game before this breakout was 16.5, last season.
Aldridge's career has followed a dramatically different path, as he was well established as an alpha dog in Portland, before willingly taking on a smaller role to be a part of this Spurs team. After averaging at least 20 points per game in five straight seasons, Aldridge is at just 15.9 this season, his lowest by far since his rookie year. His shots per game average dropped more than six from last season, and one of the league's highest usage players has taken on a smaller share of the team's offense than in any other season since 2009-10. That kind of sacrifice isn't for everyone, and the fact that the two newest faces of the franchise embody it says a lot about them.
Of course, Fantasy players have a different view of the Spurs, and Week 13 (Jan. 18-24) draws that into stark contrast. The "all for one" ethos in San Antonio is great for winning ballgames, but it doesn't do much for Fantasy production, and heading into a week with just two games on the schedule makes it extremely tough to rely on anyone here.
You can take everyone who isn't named "Kawhi" or "LaMarcus" out of your lineup pretty easily to start with; no one else on the roster even averages 28 minutes per game. That's the easy call. You probably also want to stick with Leonard, even with the short schedule. Of course, the fact the games are part of a back-to-back set against arguably the two worst teams in the NBA right now -- the Suns and Lakers -- does leave the potential for Leonard to sit on the table. However, he has been so tremendous this season, he is worth the risk.
Aldridge may not be. He's projected to finish 130th in Fantasy scoring this week, which makes him a borderline starting option in most Fantasy leagues. Throw in the risk for a potential rest day in one of those games, and Aldridge's upside may not be worth the risk that starting him carries.
