Donald Trump blasted the NFL. (USATSI)

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has found himself closely aligned with the NFL at various times throughout his campaign.

It's usually been random, due to Joe Flacco-eliteness at debates or because he's buddies with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady or because he can get the Jets into the playoffs. But this time Trump invited the discussing, bashing the NFL for being "soft" during a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada.

“It’s boring. Although I love [New England Patriots quarterback] Tom Brady -- but it’s become soft, like our country has become soft," Trump said.

Trump, apparently, watched the Bengals-Steelers game on Saturday night and was disturbed by some of the flags thrown by the refs, calling the games "crummy."

“Who wants to watch these crummy games?” Trump said (via Pro Football Talk) before adding that “what used to be considered a great tackle, head-on and violent" is no longer legal.

These days you mostly just hear politicians saying the NFL needs to focus more on player safety. Although Trump holding a bold opinion is hardly a surprise any more.
