Julian Edelman returned to Patriots practice on Sunday. Two days later, he left with an apparent foot injury. Early in the joint session with the New Orleans Saints, the receiver was working in a one-on-one drill, then left the field and slammed his helmet into the ground. He was subsequently attended to by trainers for 10-15 minutes, per several reporters on the scene.

Edelman had surgery on his left foot over the offseason and just came off the PUP for it. Not good. #Patriotshttps://t.co/W9VeCTffjS

Edelman missed the final seven regular-season games of the 2015 season after suffering a broken bone in his foot during a game against the New York Giants. He returned for the playoffs and had 17 catches for 153 yards, but did not exhibit his typical burst in and out of routes. He subsequently had surgery during the offseason and had been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list until being activated for practice on Sunday.
There's not much more information available at this time, but any significant injury would obviously be a huge blow for the Patriots. Edelman is the team's clear No. 1 wide receiver (and No. 2 passing game target after Rob Gronkowski) and would be a good short-depth security blanket for Jimmy Garoppolo as he fills in for the suspended Tom Brady over the first four games of the season.
The wide receiver depth chart beyond Edelman gets thin quickly; you're looking at Danny Amendola and not much else. Nate Washington, Chris Hogan, Keshawn Martin, and Aaron Dobson are the only guys with any degree of experience, and they don't inspire much confidence.
