Overton was designated for assignment on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The Padres needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Miguel Diaz, who was activated from the 60-day DL as a corresponding move. Overton, 26, is on his third team in two years, and while he used to be a notable prospect, his poor pitching of late may allow him to go unclaimed in the waiver process. He has a 6.65 ERA and just 11 strikeouts in 23 big-league innings split between the Mariners and Padres this season.
