Rashad Jennings was drafted in Round 10 on average in CBSSports.com leagues this year. His ownership in Week 1 was 84 percent.
But after suffering a knee injury in the season opener at Minnesota and watching Maurice Jones-Drew look like a star following his offseason holdout, many Fantasy owners dropped Jennings. That could be a regrettable transaction.
Jones-Drew suffered a foot injury in Week 7 at Oakland and is already ruled out for Week 8 at Green Bay. There is a chance he could miss several weeks, if not the rest of the season, which should make Jennings a star. He will be the most added player in all leagues this week, and he is worth at least 30 percent of your remaining bid points.
We have another week with several prominent running backs on bye (Arian Foster, Ray Rice, Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller), so many owners may also be looking at LaRod Stephens-Howling or Jonathan Dwyer, especially if Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles) remains out. We'll also address the future value of quarterbacks Josh Freeman and Brandon Weeden, receivers Jeremy Kerley and Santana Moss and tight end Dustin Keller.
Editor's note: Must add is for players worth adding in all leagues. Maybe add is for players worth adding in 14-team leagues or larger. Desperation add is for players worth adding only if you're, well, desperate. The ownership percentage listed is how many leagues that player was owned in the previous week for CBSSports.com.
Quarterbacks
Must add: Josh Freeman,
Buccaneers (62 percent), Brandon Weeden,
Browns (33 percent)
Maybe add: Sam Bradford, Rams (41 percent), Jake Locker,
Titans (24 percent), Ryan Tannehill,
Dolphins (20 percent), Matt Hasselbeck,
Titans (16 percent)
Desperation add: Mark Sanchez, Jets (16 percent), John Skelton,
Cardinals (7 percent), Brady Quinn,
Chiefs (3 percent)
The breakdown: We told you last week in
this space that Freeman had the chance to be helpful against the Saints,
and he responded with 34 Fantasy points. He now has 63 Fantasy points in
his past two games and should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback
with upside going forward. As long as Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams
continue to make outstanding plays for Freeman, his value will continue
to rise. ... If I needed a replacement quarterback for this week, I
would consider Weeden or Bradford over Freeman. Weeden is averaging 20
Fantasy points a game over the past three weeks and he gets San Diego at
home. The Chargers have allowed 12 passing touchdowns and at least 250
passing yards in their past four games. Bradford also gets the Patriots
this week, and New England has allowed five quarterbacks to score
multiple touchdowns against them and four to reach at least 325 passing
yards. ... If you need a Titans quarterback this week then Hasselbeck is
the safer option since he should start against the Colts, who have
allowed five quarterbacks to pass for multiple touchdowns this season.
But if you're looking long-term then gamble on Locker, who still has
plenty of upside once his left shoulder is healthy. He is expected to
resume his starting job soon. ... In deeper leagues you might look at
Tannehill as a bye-week replacement at the Jets, who have allowed three
quarterbacks to throw multiple touchdowns this year. You can also
consider Quinn against the Raiders with Matt Cassel (head) out, but that's more of a desperation play at
best.
Running backs
Must add: Andre Brown, Giants (72
percent), Daryl Richardson, Rams (70
percent), Montario Hardesty, Browns (43
percent), Jonathan Dwyer, Steelers (37
percent), LaRod Stephens-Howling,
Cardinals (21 percent), Rashad Jennings,
Jaguars (20 percent)
Maybe add: Jacquizz Rodgers, Falcons (48 percent), Peyton Hillis, Chiefs (45 percent), Mike Goodson, Raiders (31 percent), Daniel Thomas, Dolphins (31 percent), Jamie Harper, Titans (1 percent)
Desperation add: Phillip Tanner, Cowboys (14 percent), Cedric Peerman, Bengals (8 percent), Chris Rainey, Steelers (2 percent)
The breakdown: Jennings
could be the Jaguars starter for the rest of the season if Jones-Drew
ends up with a serious foot injury, and Jennings did well in relief
against the Raiders in Week 7 with 15 Fantasy points. He is capable of
posting double digits on a weekly basis if he continues to see as much
work as he got at Oakland with 21 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown
and seven catches for 58 yards. Jones-Drew had at least 18 total touches
in three of the first five games. Plan on starting Jennings in Week 8 at
the Packers, who have allowed four running backs to reach double digits
in Fantasy points. ... If you miss on Jennings and need help this week
your next target should be Dwyer, who had 17 carries for 122 yards at
the Bengals in Week 7. If Mendenhall and Isaac Redman (ankle) are out again in Week 8 then we would start
Dwyer against the Redskins, who have allowed seven running backs to
reach at least nine Fantasy points. ... Brown scored against Washington
last week and is back as the handcuff to Ahmad Bradshaw, who is again battling foot problems. Every Bradshaw
owner better have Brown on their roster. ... Owners looking to stash
someone should add Stephens-Howling, who should remain the No. 1 running
back for the Cardinals going forward. He had 20 Fantasy points at
Minnesota in Week 7, but he won't be worth starting in Week 8 against
San Francisco. Still, he could turn into a flex option, especially if
you're stuck due to injuries, and it appears like William Powell will go back to a reserve role. ... You should also plan
on stashing Richardson, who continues to get more work for the Rams and
has 16 Fantasy points in his past two games. ... If you have the roster
space, stash guys who have struggled like Rodgers and Hillis. If either
gets a chance at increased playing time we could be looking at quality
production. ... Harper has three touchdowns in his past two games, which
is hurting Chris Johnson. Owners in
standard formats could add him if you are in dire need, and he could
score again this week against the Colts. ... Hardesty had a terrible
game against the Colts in Week 7 with seven carries for 28 yards in
relief of Trent Richardson (ribs), but
there's a chance Richardson could be out in Week 8. If that happens then
Hardesty could be a flex option against the Chargers, who have allowed
four running backs to reach double digits in Fantasy points this year.
... Thomas (head) should return this week against the Jets. He scored
against them in Week 3.
Wide receivers
Must add: Darrius Heyward-Bey,
Raiders (54 percent), Brandon Gibson,
Rams (51 percent), Jeremy Kerley, Jets
(45 percent), Brandon LaFell, Panthers
(42 percent), Santana Moss, Redskins (40
percent), Chris Givens, Rams (16
percent)
Maybe add: Davone Bess,
Dolphins (42 percent), Titus Young,
Lions (35 percent), Greg Little, Browns
(31 percent), Brandon Stokley, Broncos
(20 percent), Ryan Broyles, Lions (1
percent)
Desperation add: Vincent Brown,
Chargers (9 percent), Cecil Shorts,
Jaguars (7 percent)
The breakdown: If you're looking for a
one-week replacement option take a chance on Givens and Gibson (in that
order) with their matchup against the Patriots, who have allowed five
touchdowns to opposing receivers in their past three games. ... Kerley
is also a good option this week and long-term as the No. 1 receiver for
the Jets since Santonio Holmes (foot)
went down. He has at least nine Fantasy points in two of his past three
games. ... LaFell is going to be hit or miss all season, but he has
three games with double digits in Fantasy points in six games and should
remain on most rosters as a reserve option. ... I'd also hold onto
Heyward-Bey, who had four catches for 85 yards on seven targets in Week
7 against Jacksonville. Like LaFell, he could remain a quality reserve
option or spot starter. ... Moss is emerging as the No. 1 receiver for
the Redskins with Pierre Garcon (toe)
hurt, and Garcon could be out for the next two games. Moss has three
touchdowns in his past three games, but he's doing it on limited catches
(nine) and targets (13). Still, the production is hard to ignore, and he
could help during the bye weeks. ... Don't be surprised if Bess has a
good game this week against the Jets. He had five catches for 86 yards
against them in Week 3 and Antonio Cromartie
will likely line up against Brian Hartline
this week. ... Little teased us again in Week 7 with six catches for 52
yards and a touchdown. If he could eliminate the drops he would be a
good No. 3 receiver in deeper leagues, especially with the emergence of Josh Gordon drawing coverage. ... Stash Brown if you can. When he's
healthy from his broken ankle he could emerge as a top target for the
Chargers. ... Young and Broyles will vie to replace the injured Nate Burleson (broken leg), with Broyles potentially having more
upside. ... Stokley has three touchdowns in his past four games.
Tight ends
Must add: Dustin Keller, Jets (25
percent)
Maybe add: Brandon Myers,
Raiders (30 percent), Joel Dreessen,
Broncos (21 percent)
Desperation add: Dallas Clark, Buccaneers (9 percent), Rob Housler, Cardinals (1 percent), David Thomas, Saints (1 percent), Chris Cooley,
Redskins (0 percent), Logan Paulsen,
Redskins (0 percent)
The breakdown: Tight end isn't a position
of priority this week with Owen Daniels
the only standout option on a bye. Scott Chandler,
Dennis Pitta and Jermaine Gresham are also off, but they haven't been starting every week
in the majority of leagues. If you need a one-week replacement or want
to gamble on a tight end then look at Keller. In the first game where he
was likely healthy all year after battling a hamstring problem he had
seven targets for seven catches, 93 yards and a touchdown at the
Patriots. Even with the emergence of Kerley, Keller will likely be
Sanchez's go-to option the rest of the season and could end up as a
quality reserve or spot starter in most leagues. ... I'd also consider
adding Dreessen, who has a touchdown in three of his past four games. He
continues to outplay Jacob Tamme in
terms of Fantasy production and could be a bye-week replacement against
the Saints in Week 8. ... Myers is still looking for his first NFL
touchdown, but he has been a good option in PPR leagues with at least
five catches in four games this season. ... The Redskins need a tight
end to replace the injured Fred Davis
(Achilles), but Cooley and Paulsen are not recommended options in most
formats. ... Thomas could have value in deeper formats if Jimmy Graham (ankle) is out, but we expect Graham to return soon. ...
Clark has been a disappointment with the Bucs, but he did score his
first touchdown in 2012 in Week 7 against the Saints, which could be
something to build off.
